"Tennessee space musicians Mark Mahoney and Michael Peck team up for their fourth duo album, A Life Incandescent (Waiting World Records 009), a feast of classic analog sounds with a strong science-fiction, exploratory vibe. The music was recorded live (at the Gathering and on Star’s End) in 2008, with both musicians working synths & laptops, and released in June 2010.
Two of the album’s standout features are clear very early on: energy and concision. Each piece crackles with energy (both organic & electronic). Buzzing leads, filter sweeps, roaring basses, spiraling spacelines, ghostly atmospheres, insect-like nicks and ticks, and more, drive us through a galaxy rich in wonders. From deep within the Appalachia, resident beatmeister ECHOTOMB (M. Peck) is set to release his
forthcoming full length “Error to the Throne” which if you’ve kept up is the follow up to his 2010
EP “LID”. More than just a heaping offering of beat madness, this album explores the depths of timbre and
tonality while staying accessible and experimental at the same time coupled with Zappaesque melody
lines and playfulness.
Clocking in at just under an hour, this album reveals the endless boundaries of Peck’s sonic palette, and

"Kuwahara - HONEYCULT: Some splendid indie music in from one of the "founders" of the home-taping underground, Mike Honeycutt. If you've never heard bees swarming, you may not relate well to this sonic assault... with headphones on, you'll believe you've been caught on the inside of the hive, & that you'll never be able to get back to "normal" (whatever that is, heh! heh!). This is synth-driven, and it's one of the most excellent excursions I've been on lately - while there are a few invasive moments, this is unusually harmonic and totally perceptive of what will drive you up the proverbial wall, but let you down gently enough to escape without commitment to the "D" ward. There wasn't a lot of information available on the web, though you can find the tracklist here... Mike is joined by M. Peck, and they've created a wealth of sonic adventures that any active listener will find irresistible... some of this stuff takes you right out to the very EDGE of the universe, and doesn't necessarily bring you back (or at least not in one piece). One of the most intriguing compositions was "Whose Children Are We?", with blunt-trauma sonic hammers ready to blow you ALL THE WAY AWAY... the other piece I just loved (my favorite track, without doubt) was the swirling opener, "A Basket For Elliot"... just beautiful! I'm impressed, and you will be, too... I give this aural adventure a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an "EQ" (energy quotient) rating of 4.98."

"The raw material out of which music by Mark Mahoney & Michael Peck is realized is not old cosmic music LPs but the ebb and flow of life. Their CD A LIFE INCANDESCENT (49'29") continues to show Mahoney & Peck as a duo living in sound. On this release they do their best to light up a dark genre that too often suffers from vapid exploration. There is more to their music than spacing-out. Treating the soundfield like a canvas their music demands imaginative interaction and asks the listener to re-align our sensitivity to sound. Through subtle gradations of tone and timbre Mahoney & Peck achieve a surreal dreamlike soundscape. From molecular whispers in the blood to an acceleration of energy, the eight pieces on A
LIFE INCANDESCENT move the mechanisms of the mind to embrace the enormity of which we all are a part. Drones, resonant sweeps, slow evocative solos, swirling digital chaos over thick analogue foundations all characterize the sonic components of this work. A postal collaboration formed by M. Peck (MaggotAppleWonderland, ECHOTOMB) and Mike Honeycutt (Mystery Hearsay) in 2009 that explores the genres of drone, noise, dark ambient, and experimental electronics.

Their first release "HoneyCult" is a cohesive and focused delivery of fertile sonic imagination and brilliant execution. More than just a frightening audio montage, this release reveals plenty of depth and introspection that is both contemplative and engaging.

The sound sources themselves are as diverse as the creators. Utilizing analog and digital synthesizers, theremin, electric and acoustic guitars, recycled audio, micro cassette recorders, field recordings and various effect boxes the two formed a tapestry of feral sonic movements, perhaps creating their own niche genre all the while which leaves much reward to the listener. Recorded and edited for the better part of 2009, the final arranging/mastering was carried out by Peck at Audio Propulsion Labs and then passed back to Honeycutt for track sequencing.

Make no mistake, this album is dark, yet accessible. Poignant and immersible. Fans of Nurse With Wound, Ure Thrall, Illusion of Safety will undoubtedly dive headfirst into this release.

"As the low drones of the title track rumble, you know instantly that you are listening to an ambient album. A slow synth lead adds a bit of structure a couple of minutes in, wailing mournfully in a Robert Rich primordial glurp sort of way. The mood gradually brightens nicely, however, creating an ambient journey that takes a number of pleasant detours, ending with beautifully sparkling space music. “A Visit To A Most Ancient Outpost” features a gently playful oboe-like synth and a soft bass pulse in the first half and bright bubbly synths and sequencing in the second half. We move back into more ambient territory with the next tracks, one spacious and light, the other dark and deep. The latter, “Voices Within the Solar Stream” is one of the best haunting ambient tracks of 2009, full of dark choirs that reverberate into infinity. “Starfish” is a very natural continuation of that tone, reminiscent of the space music sound of Jonn Serrie, albeit a shade darker than that. “Sailing Into Calm Remembrances” has more of a Brian Eno feel about it, minimal ambient with subtle sonic colorings throughout. “Chopped Logic” sounds like its name, a quirky ambient mish-mash that entertains to the end. Mark Mahoney has nicely carved out a unique niche for himself in the ambient genre."

M Peck's City Skies Performance

It was a great night for live music last Saturday in Decatur's Kavarna; located in somewhat of an oasis in the downtown area. A surprisingly large number of people were on hand and close to a hundred were tuned in on stillstream.com to listen in on the evening's performances.

Kuwahara: Honey Cult
From experimental electronic performer Mike Honeycutt and M. Peck, Honey Cult offers an orgy of sound with a dismal undercurrent. The first single "A Basket for Elliot" can be heard on the Chaotic Underworld Noise Compilation Volume 4 "We Still Prey".
Release date in mid-November

Back again together to collaborate on their fourth full length release that focuses on material composed for the 2008 Gathering performance in Philadelphia, PA. This perhaps is the most diverse and conceptual offering from Mahoney and Peck to date.

This past weekend's AE09 performances from Mahoney and Peck went expectantly well.
12 hours of non-stop streaming performances were streamed from around the world, and apparently had a record turnout of online listeners which is always a plus.

M.Peck (also known as Michael Peck and Redfadesbeforeblue) is a composer of electronic and dark ambient soundscapes. He’s been recording music with digital synthesizer, software applications and Theremin since 2000. Already known to the electronic scene as a maestro of ominous dark ambient, he brings us Dysmha.

“Deathbed Memory” is a texture of ambient sounds woven with Theremins, guitar effects, cymbals and some truly ghost-like vocals. It has what can best be described as a monumentally glacial mood. This is definitely music to conjure up a sinister atmosphere. Howling effects ascend and descend into a wasteland of eerie sounds.

“Ghost With Conscious”, while similar in sounds has a definite industrial slant to it. My only dispute is that maybe it’s a fraction too alike, as one song seemed to end without a new one beginning. That being said, it is a cohesive piece in relation to “Deathbed Memory” with a continuation of menacing sonic journey.

A level of above par production must be mentioned. In a word, it’s flawless. M.Peck’s technical ability is about as close to perfection as a performer can come to. That perfection can lean on the side of coldness, but maybe that was the point of the compositions within themselves. After all how many of our memories are of the warm and fuzzy nature (found on the deathbed or not)? Could the specter without awareness of their thoughts and actions be those around us or our own selves? Maybe M. Peck is asking us for that answer.

Summer Solstice Stream

Earlier tonight, electro-music.com and stillstream.com embarked on an unusual homage to the Summer Solstice via internet. For 24 straight hours, they broadcasted live electronic music from musicians that spanned the entire globe ranging from dark ambient, berlin school, experimetnal to Chuck Improvosations, and more, live via the web.
WWR artists Mark Mahoney and M. Peck took up an hour slot from 8:00-9:00pm est. and delivered some great sonic gravy. Each generating contrasting sets of bio-ambience and cerebral interludes.

MARK MAHONEY: Beyond the Vaulting Sky (CD on Waiting World Records)

This release from 2009 offers 58 minutes of ambient electronic music.

Brooding atmospherics are seasoned by delicate electronic waves that lend the sky music an expansive milieu.

As an ambient foundation unfurls, pleasant electronics sigh and ripple with languid definition. Lavish hissing sweeps cascade through the mix. Deep tones resonate in tandem with high-end pitches, establishing a congenial counterbalance of effects. Flutish keyboards mingle with mechanized rainfall, evoking a winsome nostalgia for unexplored realms.

The presence of grittier enhancements introduce favorable substance to the ethereal flow. Glitchy chitterings, hints of percussive pitterings, sparkling diodes, gurgling chords--all of which provide the tuneage with delightful density. Mahoney has an alluring tendency to balance softness with body, resulting in an appealing robust sound that remains fragile and peaceful.

In some tracks, sounds are utilized in a percussive manner, bolstering the gently streaming melodies with rhythmic motivation. The tempos are amiable and mild, coaxing a moderate degree of animation to the ambience.

While these compositions are generally ambient in nature, the presence of more substantial embellishments elevate the music to contemporary status. The harmonic definition often exhibits enticing melodic traces, giving the music's contemplative character an entertaining spirit.

Saturday, July 11 Mark Mahoney will be appearing at the monthly City Skies concert series held in Decatur, Ga. (Just outside of Atlanta).
This will be Mark's third appearance at the City Skies series which is curated by our friend Jim Combs (aka Sensitive Chaos). The City Skies monthly series offers an intimate setting for fans of all genres of electronica and electro-acoustic performance. The venue is rather quaint offering both food and drink and a wonderful sound system to get the most bang for your buck.

"Definitely not one for those of delicate ambient sensibilities, Dysmha creeps malevolently into the "doombient" bag with the emphasis on the doom- rather than the (am)bient. DQ (Doom Quotient) is cranked down past the fuzz/buzz-point where you'd locate Fear Falls Burning, and past the gruzz/scuzz-point of Nadja, rendered namby-pambient by comparison. Nearest spirit-kin for these diseased slabs of creeping audio-efflatus would be in the sludge dungeons of Sunn O))). Walls of corrosive guitar, theremin and audio-scum are stirred together into a foul brew of purulent atmospheres of oppressive expressivity. That's opener, "Deathbed Memory." An excoriating pitch black exercise of asphyxiating dense guitar sludge dredged up from some Stygian depths, all toxic brimstone and bitter treacle, is its companion piece "Ghost with No Conscious," a harbinger of no less nihilist doom-gloom."
